Vegetarian and vegan - Understand the differences

Whether you are preparing meals for someone else, or thinking about changing your diet you need to know the difference between a vegetarian and vegan. In short, a vegetarian is someone who eats no meat or fish and a vegan is someone who eats no animal products at all.

There are, of course, people who eat meat and fish occasionally. They may be in the process of changing to a vegetarian diet full or try to reduce their consumption of saturated fats. It could be considered as semi-vegetarians.

Some vegetarians consume milk and dairy products but do not eat eggs. They are often called lacto-vegetarians. They be vegans, except that include milk in their diet.

Another Vegetarians avoid milk, but eat eggs. They are the ovo-vegetarians. They would Vegans, if not eaten eggs.

In some places many vegetarians can pass through either of these stages, if they are moving toward a diet completely vegetarian. A vegan avoids all animal products, including clothing. Some vegetarians do not even eat honey and yeast.

All of these preferences Food should be respected as valid life-style choices. The dietary preferences of your guests should be seen as a challenge rather than a chore.

It is possible to ensure a nutritious diet for an adult, following either of these plans. For a complete vegetarian protein should come from vegetables and cereals combined interesting combinations. Vegetarians also eat these dishes. If you provide a variety of dishes for your guests can make their own decisions.

If want to make the switch to a completely vegetarian diet yourself what is best to start with a gradual change. First work toward a vegetarian diet and then slowly move towards a vegan diet. Try not to be too hung up in the categories of vegans or vegetarians. Feel that way and enjoy getting to know the potential of the whole vegetarian through to vegan spectrum.
