Diabetes among children

Even children, like adults, often are diagnosed with diabetes. Most children have type 1 or juvenile diabetes who require insulin regularly to maintain proper body functions. There are an increasing number of children are now the diagnostic with type 2 diabetes that historically has only been found in adult populations.

Most of the facts about children and diabetes emphasize the importance understanding of this disease and find ways to manage and control effectively:

  • One in every 300-450 children worldwide have diabetes.
  • Approximately 175,000 U.S. children are under age 18 have diabetes.
  • Type 1 or juvenile diabetes occurs when the immune system begins to generate cells that destroy the pancreatic cells responsible for insulin production in the body. If the child does not receive insulin every day of the child will die.
  • 13,000 children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes each year. These children are at greater risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and immune complications throughout their lives.
  • Type 2 or diagnosis of adult onset is becoming more common in children. This is a condition where the body is unable to use insulin produced because it has developed resistance to insulin. Eventually, the pancreas can not produce sufficient amounts of insulin, and complications arise.
  • Type 2 diabetes is more closely linked to obesity, especially if there is a history of diabetes in the family. It is also more common in African American, Latino, Asian, American and indigenous children.

Control of diabetes in children

Like adults, children diagnosed with type 2 diabetes must closely monitor both food intake and amount of exercise that you complete every day. Although not necessary to eliminate all your favorite foods, it is important to teach children concepts of portion control and healthy eating. Often in the culture today is not so much to do in a day when meals are often skipped or eaten on the run or in the car. Fast foods are a good substitute for fruit and vegetables fresh, lean meats and whole grains.

Try to schedule for your child time to sit at a balanced meal as often as possible, ideally three times per day. Try to include whole grains, fiber, lean meats, fish, dairy products and fruits and vegetables. To reach children to eat healthy, try the following:

  • "Trail mix", including a variety of nuts, soy nuts, dried fruit instead of chips.
  • Cereal bars instead of cookies or donuts.
  • The whole wheat bread instead of white bread.
  • The carrot and celery instead of French fries
  • Bake foods instead of frying
  • Salads as a meal or snack before meals
  • Vegetables raw or fruit dipped in yogurt

Remember that model healthy lifestyles will help their children learn. Exercise together as a family. Go to ride a bike, walk or go to the park and play together. Small changes in lifestyle can lead to large changes in health status over time. Start little by little and work together as a family to reach your diet and exercise goals.
