The pitfalls of a raw food or Vegan Diet
In this article, Dr. Jameth Sheridan shares candidly about the dangers of a raw food or vegan diet.
Renegade Roundtable with Dr. Jameth Sheridan. Dr. Sheridan is a naturopath and nutritional counseling. He and his wife Kim co-author of "Uncooking with Jameth and Kim "and co-owning and operating the Power of Nutritional Health.
Kevin: So you've been at this for 23 years. What are some common pitfalls related to a raw food or vegan diet?
Jameth: I think the main stumbling block that gets a premium food, based my 23 years of experience in raw foods with countless thousands of people, if you're a normal person, eating regular food, and say that we premiums are sick and go away and get well, I think it ultimately fails. Because I see people when they "fall off the wagon" for so to speak, they fall hard and use what he started. So if I'm eating pizza and chicken regulate normal and regular animal products, things like that, regular cookies, I fall off the wagon with oil, are things with family, I'll go ahead and eat those and then, you know, "When I do, and end up with my drunkenness, then I'll go back to being raw. "And I see a lot of people leaving raw foods or just being less healthy by the comings and goings between things. Because Raw emphasis is so difficult, and that's how I was taught also in the rough, forget all the other things that are important to make a diet of raw success. And the number one thing that makes a raw food diet successfully - suddenly, you're a vegan food.
If you go vegan, suddenly, if you stop eating animal products, cooked or raw - are not good for you, you had a huge increase in their health. Your chance of osteoporosis has fallen sharply, your chance of getting cancer has fallen, and like all vegan food, your chance of getting heart disease is almost nonexistent.
Now means complete food, which is not only the consumption of white sugar, white flour and hydrogenated oil - all of which are vegetarian, but all of which are absolutely abysmal for you. A whole food vegan eat things like millet, amaranth, quinoa, chickpeas, you know, grains, beans, legumes, fruits, vegetables - real food unadulterated by nature. You're eating an organic diet, when it tends to be raw and organic is huge. These things are just additives, and not just eat a whole food, organic, vegetarian diet, also completely change the types of foods you are eating. For example, you will not eat, say that a vegetarian pizza, frozen, cooked, frozen vegetarian pizza to a raw. Change the food completely. You go from eating, say, a frozen vegetarian pizza, or a regular pizza, food for broccoli and cauliflower, and fruits, and sprouts and flax seed, and the real are totally different types of food. Therefore the amount of nutrients you are getting to be a raw material feed, unless you are frugivorous, is much higher. Consume more water is also usually, unless you is doing a lot of things dehydrated, or lots of cocoa, which is more hydrated, which is very beneficial. Some diets are a lot of raw vegetable juice, which is tremendously beneficial. And also eating a lot of raw foods is not a benefit to actually have things pretty raw, but only one many benefits.
In the teaching of raw foods, not often taught, often taught that there are two categories of foods: foods that are raw and cooked foods, and there is nothing in between. So if you're eating something cooked, so it could be the cheese lasagna instead of lasagna Tofu, as in the raw food world, there's really no difference. And I see that the health information devastate people, and seen people leave the movement raw food you have, say, 80, 90% of his health has improved, and "Wow, I love this." And maybe 10 or 20% have no, or 10 or 20% may have worsened for some reason, a deficiency emerged somewhere. And if you usually talk to the leaders of raw foods or watching the raw text, they say, "Well, there is a problem with you, you're cleaning, you're this, you are so blah, blah, blah, blah. You have to be raw, cooked all the food is poison. "Even you know, sometimes with a macrobiotic diet, macrobiotic diet is the cure of all cooked foods, vegan diet, there are many people who have overcome cancer with that. Now you can not beat cancer in the venom, and by no means am an advocate of macrobiotics, by any stretch of the imagination, because I that macrobiotics is exhausted long term, but much better than the standard American diet.
So I think it is important to be a collection of vegan food in some time, and get a good base of it. And if raw foods does not work for some reason, do not throw the baby with the bath water.
Kevin: So some of the deficiencies found, raw foods are perhaps ...
Jameth: I'm not saying they are widespread, only wants to make sure is clear. I have met more than 20 years who eat raw food, for the most part, were following this regime, and appear to be vibrantly healthy and are in excellent health, and I have no interest in trying to change your diet at all. I just want them to live optimally and the creatures on the planet lives optimally and the planet too. But for those who do, there are some - a group of eating raw foods - not necessarily know how to define the types still - But it could be, people tend to be vata, is, in my experience, not necessarily grow in 100% raw food. And could there possibly deficiencies a type of protein because it is a protein deficiency, as in raw foods, if you eat an adequate amount of nuts and seeds - and I think you can eat too much of them - but an adequate amount, say, a handful or less, you can get tons of protein to do that. But there are vata types, with my experience, take a long time to recover from exercise, and has a muscular build time much harder, right in the nut and seed protein. And I really can not eat enough broccoli and the broccoli is, I think 20 or 30% - proteins, very high. But to get that much of grams of protein broccoli, which is virtually impossible. To eat as many calories, you actually would have played a couple of cases from the stems of broccoli to get enough protein - And you would get enough protein in that case. However, broccoli is also a cruciferous vegetable, and I love cruciferous vegetables for detoxification the liver, its benefits against cancer and have some benefits for hormone balance as well. These foods are great. But broccoli, cruciferous vegetables raw or a lot is very, very difficult to process. It is difficult to treat. So in cases like that, I've seen, if people move to the legume family, has why be soy. Soybeans are one of the hundreds of different legumes. If you do not like soy for some reason, just do not eat - it is not necessary. Lentils, chickpeas, mung beans, adzuki beans, things like that. Now you can certainly do the premiums, but it is ironic that one reason that soy is charged between the communities of food Raw is because research shows that raw soybeans is very difficult to digest. It has enzymes and proteins and other inhibitors in it that make it difficult treat and difficult to cultivate, but that is when soybeans are commodities. Now, when spring any legume, legumes, sprouts, still has a lot of these anti-nutrients them and is more difficult to digest and get everything in a raw legume sprout. Now it is almost ironic, however, when the vegetables steam to destroy all inhibitors of the enzyme and the enzymes. But at least it is enzymatically neutral now. You have not cooked, or charred, or burned for no increase in count lucocytosis white blood cells, with steamed vegetables or steamed vegetables. For those who do not thrive in the rough, if they do, sprouts and steamed vegetables, not slightly Steamed have to steam the whole way. Raw is difficult to digest. Most people do not even make hummus with chickpeas raw premiums. Have you noticed that?
Kevin: Yes.
Jameth: Because they are very difficult to digest raw. I made a lot of raw chicken peas in my day, a lot of things and always raw sprouts I used to and still is the leftover material, a bath or pate or something, and strips in the dehydrator raw chickpeas and make hamburgers the next day and eat dinner. I did it once and I ate things in the morning, the humus raw chicken peas I had the day before, a lot of them, brought them to my seminar and the man who had a hard time even being in the seminary because he had so much volume gas that smelled so bad and I was in so much pain I could not really be social in the existing building. I had to leave.
Kevin: Wow.
Jameth: Now that was because I had a concentrated version, dehydrated. Now if sprout chickpeas and beans can be difficult to germinate. Sometimes, just go bad before they sprout. Now I do not mean soaking. So really sprouted chickpeas that are steamed mixed with tahini raw, no reason at all or how to cook their sesame paste, is extremely digestible. Very, very palatable and surprisingly to return if their spring and steamed vegetables put some linseed oil on them and the salt is Himalayan salt, Celtic sea salt, a little tamari or miso gluten, a kind of good quality source of organic sodium, in my experience I have never seen someone not wish to remove or desire of the flesh. That is much better for you nutritional eating a piece of meat, raw or not. By any measure that Science has now found, including photography [indecipherable] far exceeds that of what is to eat raw meat. So what I'm saying is to throw out the baby with the bath water and 100% bonus, if you're eating an animal product, since we are not better off. It's better than eating a meal all cooked vegan food as it came up, steam, oil, salt, flax, vegetables of which I spoke. That's my experience.
