Goji Berries-The Longevity Fruit
They seem to be emerging everywhere, either as an ingredient in granola bars or crisis or just as a juice, tea or dried fruit. Goji berries or wolfberries as it is sometimes called, are far from a new food, however, have been used for centuries in Chinese medicine for cure a variety of ailments.
The nickname "longevity fruit" comes from the fact that in northern China, where the availability and consumption of fruit is high, more than 16 times the number of people over 100 years old compared with the rest of the country. These centenarians tend to be much more healthier and more active than their counterparts in Western culture.
Old folklore says that a Chinese man who ate Goji berries lived to the ripe old age of 252 years! It is not surprising that known as the "longevity fruit"! A source has also coined the nickname "Hallelujah Berry."
Well, is there any truth to these claims?
As is the case with many herbal and nutritional supplements, sufficient scientific evidence demonstrating the therapeutic benefit is not available yet.
Here is what is known: Goji berries are nutritious foods that are considered quite safe for everyone except pregnant or lactating women. (You should avoid eating Goji berries until more is known about how it really works this food in the body.)
It is recommended that people limit consumption of Goji fruit to 10 to 30 g per day, due to the content of selenium, which can be toxic at high levels of consumption.
It is believed that Goji berries can act to lower blood sugar therefore recommended that herbs and other supplements known to reduce blood sugar, such as ginger, fenugreek, kudzu and should not be consumed with Goji berries to prevent hypoglycemia. As a precaution, herbs such as ginger, ginseng, turmeric, and valerian should also not be taken with Goji fruit, due to a possible combined effect of hypertension.
How nutritious Goji berries are?
Consider this. Goji berries are rich sources of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Weight, containing 68% carbohydrate, 12% protein 10% fat and 10% fiber, with 370 calories per 100g. They also contain 33 minerals, 18 amino acids and vitamins 6.
