I love this book!

by C. Cage from Florida on 2010-02-09
This book has been indispensable to me. My son is 11 months old and we have been using this book since I started him on solids at 6 months. He did not like plain cereals, so I started him with squash mixed with different grains and he loved it. I don't see anything wrong with the tone in which the book is written. The writer is not alarmist, just very honest about the potential effects of foods. There is a ton of great information on vegetarian pregnancy and raising your child vegetarian as well. The author does a great job presenting that information without being judgmental about either choice. I highly recommend this book for anyone willing to make a change from their convenient, unaware lives to conscious living and eating.

There are better baby cookbooks

by Margaret from PA on 2009-03-14
This baby cookbook had too much introductory and too little recipes. Way too wordy for a busy mom. I would recommend the cookbook that Williams and Sonoma sells. A book that has lots of recipes for easy, fun and edible baby food.

PKP mother of 6 month old Addison

by P. Prater from Anchorage, AK on 2009-03-02
In order to keep this as short and sweet as possible I'll say that I totally agree with all the 5 star reviews already posted. Although I haven't yet started my baby on solids, we'll be starting in another two weeks. After reading this book I feel much more prepared than after reading 3 other books on the subject. The author is much more conservative and slow to introduce foods but with food alergies hitting an all time high in our country I'd rather take it slow than risk my daughter developing allergies. After following J. Rubin's recomendations I'll know that I did everything possible to avoid allergies. Also, the book is right in line with my philosophies of how we should eat; organic and as much local produce as possible. I love the fact that she explains, with fantastic information, why we should eat organic and local. After reading this book, I can't imagine any parent would disregard the information on organic foods or worse feed their child store bought baby food all the time.In short, fantastic book! ALL PARENTS OF AN INFANT SHOULD READ THIS BOOK!!

Great ideas and recipes

by Sebastian Montgomery from TX on 2009-02-12
We had decided from the beginning that we would be making our own baby food. It just fit in with our lifestyle and parenting ideals. Plus, we could control exactly what was going in our little one's body. Buying organic and local when possible makes things even more healthful and good for the earth. This book guides you through the different nutritional developmental stages and provides recipes for each. Of course anyone can make mashed bananas without a recipe, but there are some other tasty things to try. Great overall resource and helps you decide when and how you'll feed your child.

good book but recipes need some work

by John Cali from on 2008-12-31
This is an overall very helpful book but I have two issues. 1) You need to add considerably more water to the cereal recipes. I wonder if she bothered to test these recipes at all. 2) You need to modify the amount of food she recommends if you plan to breastfeed for at least a year. She has the baby eat three meals of solids per day very quickly including three weeks of nothing but cereal (which could cause constipation in many babies).

PACKAGING CONTAINS BPA

Glass jar lids contain minute amounts of BPA. This is not for my baby. If something is organic it should have safe packaging as well. Call them, they have to tell the truth.

Perfect To keep the mess down

best spoon ever!!! food doesn't get on the bottom and it is so much cleaner and easier!! a must have, i held off for 3 months on buying it and finally gave in. i didnt think it could be that much easier but it is soooo much better! i wish i would have had it from day one.

LOVE IT!!!!!!!!

by grandma go from Hoisington, KS on 2010-05-12
Bought this for my 5 month old grandson and his mom and dad. Don't know who loves it more !?! He was having trouble eating from a regular baby spoon but is doing awesome with the "squirt spoon". Plus, there's no waiting to go for the next bite. We will be buying a couple more!

Convenient while out but not so practical for home use.

by H. Gilbert from Greensboro, NC on 2010-05-02
I love the product but it will take you a time or two to learn how to use it without getting food splattered all over your babies face. You will need to shake the food down about every bite to get rid of any air bubbles or food is going to splatter all over your babies face! It was kinda funny the first time it happened. This probably happens more with cereal added but I usually add cereal to his meals now. ;-)Also, I find that putting the rice cereal in the spoon dry is a good way to carry it when your out so all you will have to add is formula from the bottle (and food if you wish) and you must bring another spoon with you so you can stir it.Also, for some reason, they decided to make a cover for the top of the spoon only and its kind of hard to snap on.I like the other reviewers idea of having the entire spoon clear so you can see how much food is left.

Must have shrunk in the dishwasher

by Celia M. Santiago from on 2010-04-27
I received this item as a gift. I had heard great things about it and would have purchased it whether I got one or not. Before our first use we put it in the dishwasher as it stated it was dishwasher safe. Well, it must have shrunk a bit in the dishwasher cause now the top part will not stay on. Everytime I squeeze it to release food it opens a bit. I'm afraid that I may give it a good squeeze and food will be everywhere. Otherwise, I think it's a pretty cool product! I just would advise not to clean it in the dishwasher.

Just Okay

by Shannon from Phoenix, AZ on 2010-08-15
I think I like this toy more than my daughter because it looks so cute. She plays with it occasionally, but not for any length of time. More then anything she likes to carry the picnic basket around like a purse. I wouldn't buy another similar or necessarily recommend. There are more toys out there that would stimulate kids pretend play.

Lots of fun and can wash in washing machine

by castang from on 2010-07-28
I got this toy for my 6 month old and he is now 12 months old and still loves it. He loved to pull the sandwitch apart. He likes carrying the pieces in his mouth everywhere he goes. The thing I love most about the toy is that you can throw all the pieces in the washing machine. Great toy! And so cute too!

Baby picnic basket

Nice, colorful basket for small children to "tuck away" little things to tote around. The "food" items are eye catching and make for a perfect quiet time toy.

Great Idea

by A. Simeone from USA on 2010-06-07
With my daughter now 8 months old, I like to give her toys that she can take apart or "spill" in this case. The act of pulling the items out is half the fun, then she gets to explore what they look & feel like and any noise they might make. I also love that they made the picnic basket clear, so she can actually see what's inside and want to get at the different "foods." It's like having 5 toys in one.

Super cute and fun!

My 6-month old loves to shake, squeeze and crinkle the picnic foods. Her favorite is the lettuce!

Description

The Earth's Best Story tells how Ron and Arnie Koss succeeded in creating the first nationally distributed organic foods company to sit next to its mainstream competition on supermarket shelves-a step that revolutionized and empowered the organic-foods movement as a whole-and benefited hundreds of farmers as well as the millions of babies whose very first foods have been organically grown, thanks to Earth's Best. The Koss brothers, Ron and Arnie, had been sprout growers, broommakers, tool restorers, butlers, and natural-foods clerks, yet raised millions of dollars to start the first organic baby food company in the United States. How unlikely was that? The Earth's Best Story is a bittersweet tale about the founding of Earth's Best Baby Foods twenty-five years ago. Told through the dual narrative of each brother, this is not a business tome, although it is rich in entrepreneurial lessons and know-how. Rather, it's more like a "how to," "how not to," and "how they did it" memoir. It's personal, it's intense, it's inspirational, and it's full of reflections and tales of wonder and woe.People of every imaginable background and station in life want to make a difference with their lives. But how do you effectively do that? How does an idea successfully journey across the wastelands separating fantasy and reality? The Koss brothers take the reader on this journey. Theirs is a tale of idealism, naivete, and possibility that reflects the quest to find a place in this world by somehow changing it for the better.

A Quest for Greatness

by Jody from New York, NY on 2010-07-09
Mostly people seek to create a business for a large monetary purpose. While profit should be a goal of any successful business venture, it is clear the Koss brothers have a much larger goal for Earth's Best. These are two brothers who love the earth, who love the world and want to make it the best place it can be. This book is their story of that love and the business they have created because of it. It's not always a happy story, there are struggles and roadblocks and periods of defeat. It is engaging and interesting with many lessons applicable o any entrepreneur.

Earth's Best - Compelling and inspiring

by Susan J Ramey from Bonner Springs, KS United States on 2010-07-07
The Earth's Best Story is very readable and relevant for people who care about our earth. This book is a most interesting tale of dreams and tenacity and courage and a deep concern about the quality of food. There is no doubt that the authors furthered the organic food movement with Earth's Best baby food. It was a pleasure and a privilege to read this book. A warm thank you to the authors. Susan Ramey

Twin Warriors of Organic Products

by retrowrestling from SGV, California on 2010-06-22
I've been an avid consumer of Organic products since around 2002 and in the last 8 or so years my health has been pretty rock solid. So as soon as I discovered that there was a book about an Organic baby-food company started by twins, I was jazzed to read all about it.Gotta say, this is one of the most personable, engaging, and engrossing books I've read in quite some time. There is so much to learn about, pick up, gather from, and enrich yourself from the reading of this book. I feel like I am in front of the Koss brothers speaking to me personally about their life. These two guys are true modern-day warriors with a hugh heart. They are absolutely fearless in following their goals, dreams, and passions. Yes, there are plenty of mistakes and pitfalls along the way; but, every step is taken with an uncompromising eye towards actualizing their dreams into this reality.Although it is a bit painful to read about the betrayals and treachery towards the Koss brothers, I do believe that it is all part of their journey and what makes them so strong. I feel enriched having read this story and want to thank Ron and Arnie Koss for sharing their adventure filled with passion and creativity.

The Earth's Best Story

by Dr Adam Weiss from Buffalo Grove,IL. on 2010-06-12
The Earth's Best Story- Two brothers with big dreams turned into reality. Arnie and Ron Koss created Earth's Best Baby Food in 1985. Ron is a natural foods product innovator and patent holder for his work on complete meal supplement ice cream. Arnie contributions include the development of the important organic certification standards which led to the Organic foods act of 1990. These brothers show you a how we did it story of launching the first organic baby-food company in United States. It's more than learning the ins and out of a working company that does good by organic not chemicals in our food systems. The books shows the up hill battle of acceptance of a better way of bring food to the table starting with our children. Highly recommended for those interested in organic foods and lifestyle.

Very engaging book

by Gaia Fried from NY, NY on 2010-05-10
This book is very exciting and kept me very engaged and eager to know more. It is told with compassion, humor, and wisdom, extremely well-written. It is a story of success, of the success of a relationship between two brothers and their personal and business integrity in the face of difficulty. It is a story of believing in and doing the right thing. The brothers' voices come through in powerful ways, and it is a story that will touch many people. It is not everyday that writers come along with this level of wit and wisdom and heart to share about such a fascinating experience. It is a story from which we can all go out singing.

A good size, but not the best insulation

by SunsetDweller from San Francisco, CA on 2010-07-29
This bag is a good size for a few sippies and some cheese sticks or small container of yogurt. However, it is not the best in terms of insulation for cold beverages - either be sure to use an ice pack with it or understand that the insulation lasts only 2-3 hours tops (much less in hot weather). I appreciate the top zip compartment, which I use to store handwipes and napkins. Other than the mediocre insulation, it is a nice multi bottle bag. When the weather is warmer, I reach for my Skip Hop Triple Bottle bag instead since it seems to provide better insulation and can be worn as a backpack or shoulder bag (this bag must be carried by hand or placed in another bag). It is pretty, but better insulation and a shoulder strap would be nice.

More than just a recipe book-- much more...

by FRK from on 2010-08-03
While this book has many great recipes, it is much more than that. It is really a guide book-- one that will help you navigate the pitfalls of processed, non-nutritious, unhealthy foods that abound today, and instead find REAL foods that your baby/toddler will love. It doesn't have to be all hotdogs with mac & cheese...The book is full of information on developmental nutrition, healthy food alternatives, and age-appropriate guidelines for what to introduce and when to introduce it. I wish we had something like this for our first!I think the best thing about this book is that as your child develops, you introduce him to real foods-- like the kind you eat as an adult. They offer great suggestions for adjustments to flavors when you might need them so new foods are not instantly rejected. But these foods are not hidden (like other books suggest). Instead, by introducing foods as they are, your child learns to eat the same foods we do. The sooner you can do this, the sooner your child will be eating whatever you prepare for yourself-- which makes life much easier (and healthier-- I am amazed at how some parents who are very healthy eaters feed their children absolute crap because "that is what she will eat").This book is full of creative ideas and is a great guide for new parents (or even experienced ones). It is not preachy, and it is backed by science. Kind of like a "Food Rules" for the under three-year-old set. We give it away with all of our baby gifts, because if you follow this book's advice, you will be giving your child a gift that is far more precious than any toy or blanket. You will be giving the gift of good health.

Every Mother Needs This Book!

by J. Bass from Dallas, TX on 2010-06-02
I have sent a copy of this book to every mother I know! My son is 2 and 1/2, and I have been following Jeannette Bessinger's recommendations since I introduced him to solid foods at 6 months old. To this day, he is an exceptional eater with a healthy palate and enjoys fruits and veggies that many of my friend's little ones won't touch. He eats the meal that I prepare for the family (not needing a separate meal of "kid food"), including things like chicken with root vegetables, any kind of steamed veggies and fresh fruit, and healthy alternatives in today's world of processed food. I understand that there is concern about having the time to prepare these things - I am a working mom with a full time job, a husband who travels, and no nanny or other in home help. The principals in this book are easy and do not require a great deal of time to follow. I encourage every mother to try it, what an amazing difference it makes in the health of our little ones. I now have a newborn, and am looking forward to using more of the recipes provided here as she grows! This is a must have, as it is everything we need to know about nutrition for our children, and certainly far surpasses anything that has ever been provided to me by my pediatrician. An exceptional resource!

The blandest band in all the land

by finulanu from Here, there, and everywhere on 2008-07-15
There was a lot of good rock music in the '90s. Unfortunately, Sugar Ray does not qualify as such, despite the fact that they were blown to massive proportions and had loads of really big, really annoying hits. You remember them - "Fly," "When It's Over," "Someday," "Answer the Phone," "Every Morning," "Falls Apart," "Under the Sun" - lighthearted, bouncy pop songs with no real substance behind them (or, in the case of "Someday," a downbeat, contemplative ballad with no substance behind it). Now, everyone likes a good pop song, me included. But the genre they fall into is already overcrowded by bands that aren't really any good, and Sugar Ray falls somewhere in between Smash Mouth (excessively annoying, almost to the point where it seems intentional) and Third Eye Blind (decent, but incapable of making a song interesting for more than two minutes or so). And even the bouncy, empty power-pop looks good in comparison to their attempts to rock out ("Mean Machine"). Their stuff is really listenable and all, but what's the point? The Posies and Weezer are far better examples of a power-pop band, and you know how they name-drop Run-D.M.C. on "Under the Sun"? I'd advise you go listen to them instead. Whatever. This stuff just bores me. It's gratingly unoriginal, poorly written, poorly executed pop with some poorly incorporated hip-hop elements. Again, it's better than Smash Mouth, but what isn't better than Smash Mouth? Blerf.

cutesy bubble-gum rock

by angela crudden from on 2007-03-24
this collection contains all the Sugar Ray songs worth listening to, and some that are not. after all, this is a cutesy, catchy band with a couple of cutesy, catchy songs and some cutesy, catchy harmonies. in sum, fun fluff (which is what i was after). i only gave it a 4 because it really didn't need to include the "pseudo-hits" that nobody listens to.

Best Baby Food by Far, but we have some allergies with this one.

by Danielle M. Smith from San Luis Obispo, CA on 2009-10-18
Earth's Best Baby Food My favorite brand of baby food by far. Both my son (who is now over 2 years old) and my daughter (now almost one) have used a wide variety of foods from Earth's Best. I am a huge proponent of feeding children primarily organic and/or locally grown foods to promote proper nutrition and growth. But I do not feel that all organic brands are equal. I've tried many varieties (including store brands and others only available through internet purchase) and found that Earth's Best is by far the best for your money.Fruit Variety Pack Normally I would say this is a great idea, but I wasn't a fan of this particular variety. My son would have been just fine with it, but unfortunately for us at this point my daughter is allergic to raspberries and mangos. These are both things I think she'll grown out of, but something you may want to consider when purchasing this item. I would suggest trying an individual serving of one from your local store to see if your child has an allergy, but if they don't I would say buy it! Other than that I do think it's a great variety for kids who need some changing up occasionally. Also, the subscription price on this variety is great and can be altered depending on how soon you need it. We ended up running through another subscription we had and were able to have another shipped as soon as we needed it.

OVERPRICED

This food is phenomenal but WAY overpriced. I pay $7.99 a case in New York City and it is often on sale for less than $6 a case at BabiesRus in New York City. Grocery prices are obscene in NY so if I am paying less here, this is no deal.
