Organic gardening. A guide on how to grow organic food
So you want to learn about horticulture organic
Identify and understand what crops can be raised at their location. Of course, obvious factors need include climate, soil, rain, and the space available. A fast and fun way to learn what grows well in your climate is to visit a nearby farm or garden. A Here are some details that may request personally experienced organic producers.
- Climate. Some places only have a very short growth period of fertilization, such as northern Europe and Canada. In weather like this, fast growing variety producing plants to do before next winter. Other areas have a warm climate for a long time, where fresh vegetables and grains can be harvested on demand.
- Of soil. Depending on the type you have available, you can expect very high yields from a small area or low yields of large areas. The best plan to follow is to plant a food crop that flourishes under conditions like a staple, and use of surplus land to grow "luxury" foods that require more fertilization and effort.
- Precipitation. Some plants grow with the minimum rainfall, but most food crops require substantial amounts of irrigation water or rain. Consider the rate of normal rainfall for your area, and the availability of irrigation in choosing crops. If you live in a dry note collection rainwater.
- Space. If enough space available, you may be able to grow a lot of foods with conventional methods, but where space is limited, you have to look at other techniques such as hydroponics, container gardening, sharecropping, and vertical gardening.
Learn how a growth period of play. Food production is more than planting seeds and expect a harvest. Next, on "growth" section, is a typical sequence of steps in growing a single crop of a plant. You have to prepare a different plant each crop, basically the same way, but when you have prepared the ground for planting, can be planted in many cultures as you want at the same time.
Always familiar with different types of food crops. We often think of the plants we see in the produce section of a market such as vegetables, and in a sense, this is true, but to really grow their own food, must take into account their whole diet. This is a list of the types of food you want to consider growth.
- Vegetables. This includes vegetables, leafy greens, tubers, maize (grain, further study below), Vining and vegetables such as squash, cucumbers, melons and pumpkins. These provide a wealth of essential nutrients and vitamins, including:
- Proteins. Legumes are a good source of protein.
- Carbohydrates. Potatoes and beets are an excellent source of complex carbohydrates and minerals.
- Vitamins and minerals. Vegetables sheet, such as cabbage and lettuce, and vine vegetables like cucumbers and pumpkins, are good sources of many vitamins and minerals.
- Fruit. Most people understand that fruits are a great source of vitamin C, but also help many other vitamins and minerals to your diet as well as offer a greater variety of flavors to enjoy. Fruits also can often be preserved by drying or canning, so that cooling is not required to keep their surplus.
- Grains. Grain Farming is not what most people imagine when they think about growing your own food, but the grains are a staple in most diets. They are full of carbohydrates and fiber, and can be easily stored for long periods of time. In many ancient civilizations, and in some countries today, the grain is the staple food of the population. This category includes food crops:
- Corn. It is often eaten as a vegetable with a meal, maize is also a versatile grain that can store all without chipping, shelled (removed from the cob with whole grains), or ground into flour for making breads and dishes like mashed cornmeal. Corn is probably the easiest to grow grain The subsistence farmer house. Freezing corn is the easiest way to preserve for winter.
- Wheat. Most people are familiar with wheat, from which we get most of our flour to bake everything from bread to cakes and pastries. Wheat stores and after harvest, the harvest, but is more laborious than it is for corn as whole plant is usually cut, pulleys (placed in batteries), met and beaten (just to release the seeds), and the ground into fine powder (flour).
- Avena. One grain, oats for human consumption are processed wheat or corn, and the labor needed in harvesting is equal to wheat. However, it can be considered an option in some areas where it is easy to grow.
- Rice. In humid areas, areas subject to flooding or may be flooded, rice is the obvious choice. Rice is grown in submerged soil surface, and harvested wheat is.
- Other grains are barley and rye, which are similar to wheat and oats.
Carefully select crops and varieties that are suitable for your region culture for growing organic vegetables. This is where the instructions in this article may not be sufficient to provide a complete and accurate information specific to you. Instead, let's see the basic requirements of different plant growth according to the standard growing regions, as provided by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) in Plant Hardiness map may be used by comparing climates in terms of latitude and altitude to region in particular.
- Beans, peas and other legumes. These are planted after the threat of frost, and require 75 to 90 days to produce fruit, which may still occur as long as the plants are kept until the frosts of autumn.
- Pumpkins. This group of plants includes squash, melons and pumpkins, and planted after the last frost, and takes about 45 days (cucumber) to 130 days of pumpkins to produce harvestable fruit.
- Tomatoes. This fruit (usually grouped with vegetables) can be planted in pots if kept warm, and transplanted into the ground after the threat of frost, and occur during well all season.
- Grains. There is a difference in the seasons with grains and varieties of summer and winter for many of these. In general, summer cereals such as maize and summer wheat are planted near the end of winter when freezing temperatures are not expected to continue for more than a couple of weeks and take about 110 days to mature, and then another 30-60 days to dry enough to harvest for seed storage.
- Fruit orchard. Apples, pears, plums and peaches are considered orchard fruits in most places, and do not require annual planting. The trees that give these fruits require pruning and maintenance and usually take 2-3 years before producing their first harvest, modest. When the trees begin to bear fruit, production should increase each year, and after they become mature and established, a single tree can produce tons of fruit per year.
Develop a "Business plan" in the land intends to use for growing organic vegetables. You will have to address specific issues planning, including the invasion of wildlife, which may require fencing or other permanent measures, sun exposure, as some plants need sunlight to produce more successful than others, and topography, since the very steep land tillage is forged with problems.
- List all possible try to cultivate crops on their land. You should try to have as diverse a selection as possible to meet the nutritional requirements mentioned above. You may be able to estimate a total yield per unit of culture by investigating the growing success of others in your area, or using information the power to buy their seed. Using the list, and the planting plan that began before, you will need to calculate the amount of seed you will need. If you have a lot room, plant a surplus to allow poor performance until you have a solid understanding of what you are doing.
- Plan to use their land as effectively as possible if it is limited in space. Except in very cold regions can expect to be able to grow and harvest of summer, autumn, winter crops spring. This will allow you to enjoy some years on fresh produce. Beets, carrots, cauliflower, peas, cabbage, onions, turnips, kohlrabi, leaf mustard, and many actually prefer other vegetables growing in cold weather if the soil is not frozen. Winter crops are also much less subject to insect problems. If you are a very small space, consider your alternatives (see tips).
Plan in its method of storage. If they are to grow grain barns will keep your harvest stored dry and safe from insects and vermin. Chances are if you intend to produce all the food you eat by itself, you will find that a combination of storage and preservation methods will be useful. The above steps are some of these methods, but as a summary, the usual methods for food storage are:
- The drying (or drying). This is a useful method for storing fruits and some vegetables. It can be done without high-tech devices in most fairly dry, hot climates.
- Canning. This requires containers (Which are reusable, with the exception of the eyelids, which may deteriorate over time), but it requires adequate preparation, cooking equipment, and skill. Pickling is considered in this article as a "canned" process, but need not be.
- Freezing. Once again, requires a little preparation or cooking, as well as a freezer and appropriate packaging.
- Bedding. Not mentioned above, this is a method of storing of root crops such as potatoes, turnips, beets and other root crops. Takes place in layers the product in a cool, dry place in a bed of straw.
- Ground storage: Many root crops and cole crops can winter in the garden. In most cases, it is important to prevent the soil from freezing. climates milder winter frost only need a blanket. However, colder climates may require payment of up to a foot and a plastic cover. This type of storage is an effective way to save space and keep their products fresh.
To determine the benefits of this activity compared to cost. You will invest a considerable amount of money in startup costs, if you do not have all the materials and equipment available in the beginning. You will also have a large amount of work, which may result in additional costs if they quit a regular job to pursue this effort. Before investing a lot of time and money, research local growth conditions, the available selections of crops, and their ability to manage this effort labor intensive. Benefits include food that has to be enjoyed without having to worry about herbicides, pesticides and other contaminants, except those used at their discretion.
Start your project in stages. If you have abundant land and enough equipment, you can start on a fairly large scale, but unless you have sufficient knowledge and experience, is betting that the plants you select are suitable for the soil and climate. Talking to people in your area often will provide the best source of information specific selection of crops and planting dates, but if this is not an option, plants "test" the planting of new crops for the first year to see how well they produce. Start at a smaller scale, perhaps trying to grow a fixed percentage of their food needs to give an idea of production total can be expected, and work your way up to a level of self-sufficiency.
