Licorice?

I have a recipe for gingerbread land that calls licorice. I am in a city where all you have are your basic stores, Food Lion, Publix, Kroger, Walmart and Super. N organic food stores or anything like that. I am aware that licorice is not licorice candy, and grind until it does nothing for me. I can not get Real licorice liquorice or land anywhere, and I wondered if there was an available substitute that could be used. I have to make a dish was Elizebethan, and this is a dessert they had. And the licorice is a common sugar substitute, so it is sweetened. However, doesn't work in reverse. anise seeds are part of the recipe
