The festivities, Fit Family: Ten ways to combat childhood obesity by getting the entire family Healthy € | Holiday Style
By Tom Gilliam, Ph.D.
The fattening holiday here in full () force. And unfortunately for the health conscious, with the tinsel and the tree comes the attack of temptation: the rich turkey gravy, dressing, sugar cookies, eggnog, cake â € "all foods comfort that taste especially comforting during a recession-battered holidays. But as we prepare ourselves mentally to push off set the party table, itâ € ™ s easy to forget that sand € ™ t the only ones facing tempting treats € "our children also.
Thata € ™ s right. Between the parties at school and half filled with sweet surprises, our children are as susceptible to the guilty pleasures we allow ourselves during the holiday season. The bad news is that the â € € œspecial occasion indulgences during the holidays which allow can quickly turn into bad habits harmful to our Children € "habits that will last long after the gifts have been unwrapped.
A healthy life always begins at home, and thata € ™ s also true when the house is covered with tinsel and lights. Research demonstrated time and again that the only way to combat childhood obesity is to make nutrition and exercise family priorities. And while itâ € ™ s good that they deliver a bit during the holidays, you should gently guide their children away from the third roll with butter and chocolate handful candy.â €
Itâ € ™ s no wonder that childhood obesity is a growing problem in the U.S. In fact, the New England Journal of Medicine recently reported that one in three children is overweight or obese. This reality has encouraged more companies to teach fitness principle â € € œfamily their employees, helping â € œget healthy children and families € togetherâ trend momentum.
Children live what they learn, and parents are their main source of information. If they see unhealthy decisions, they naturally assume itâ € ™ s good for them too.
With busy holiday schedules and tighter budgets, it can seem impossible to find new and creative ways to help your family fitness in the car. Not so. Making just a few simple changes to a family € ™ s daily routine can have a huge impact on everyonee € ™ s overall fitness.
Here are some tried and true tips to get your family in no shapeâ € "only during the vacation, but at any time of year:
Find a œhiddenâ € € exercise in your routine holiday cleaning. It may seem obvious, but good old-fashioned tasks can be one of the best ways to stay fit. And why, luckily, there are plenty to do tasks in this time of year. Be sure to involve your children in any pre-holiday parties or just general cleaning of the house tidy. Vacuuming, dusting, mopping, sweeping, and taking away are all the ways your children can do their part for the family, helping to ensure that the activity they need each day. Pump up the volume of great music during homework time for all moving and the house cleaned in no time!
Brave the air ice cream and enjoy the winter tests. In the days of snow, receiving packages and move. Go to sledding, building snow angels and having snowball with their children. If youâ € ™ re near a city, hit the sidewalks and enjoy the holiday window displays. Or if itâ € ™ s too cold or rainy, visit an indoor sports facility as a batting cage or an indoor rock climbing center. Without doubt, wins sitting in a couch potato!
Breaking relieve the boredom of winter with a lively game of Duck, Duck, (Christmas) Goose. Anxious to know how to get their children when they € ™ re out of school for a few weeks? Add instant entertainment € "and sneak in some exerciseâ €" by showing them games you liked playing when you were a child. Teach them all about Red Rover, Mother, May I?, Duck, Duck, Goose, and Red Light, Green Light € "and then spend an hour after dinner to play one of them. Itâ € ™ sa great way to stay active and create some special childhood memories for her own children. Time Output www.gameskidsplay.net For a complete list of instructions, plus other suggestions for new games learn and try together!
Good model to œsnackingâ € € habits. As mentioned earlier, children learn from your eating habits and exercises for you. If they see you make a healthy snack like an orange instead of taking another handful of holiday party mix, they € ™ ll go to the good things too. But donâ € ™ t rely on sheer willpower. Try to keep the house down on junk food. Kids Help prevent the temptation to keep the house provided with healthy snacks like fruits and delicious yogurt, candy, raisins, and natural peanut butter. Just because itâ € ™ s vacation doesn € ™ t say itâ € ™ s good pass in sugary foods and greasy.
On Moreover, the prohibition donâ € ™ t all holiday treats. When it comes to taking the family to eat healthier, many parents make the mistake pulling all the candy, cookies, juices and other foods that children tend to love. That is the wrong approach. Donâ € ™ t make any food completely out of bounds. While the food is consumed in moderate amounts, itâ € ™ s right! Doing something outside the boundaries can cause your child is drunk to time are available at school or in Grandmaâ € ™ s. Furthermore, the holidays just wouldn t ™ € be the Christmas holidays without the Hanukkah occasional cookie or donut.
Make exercise a daily habit. If itâ € ™ sa 30-minute walk after dinner every night or a weekly trip to the local walking trail, exercise with your family a consistent routine in their day to day. Besides being good for you, you can help relieve some holiday stress and help your kids burn off some of their energy excited. When itâ € ™ s part of its regular schedule, as go Grandmaâ € ™ s on Sunday or have spaghetti for dinner on Thursday nights, his children are expected. And who knows? If you maintain your exercise routine, their children may even wait the additional family time.
Establish a holiday fitness contest. Children are naturally competitive. Use that quality to their advantage. All Buy a pedometer and telling kids that anyone who logs the most miles done to open the first Christmas or Hanukkah present. Alternatively, create a goal that the whole family can work together. Establish a number of miles a week and each family plot membered € ™ s progress through the day. At the end of the week if the family has made their collective goal, then celebrate with a movie night or a special (low-fat!) frozen yogurt.
Encourage kids € ™ culinary curiosity. Never stand in the way of his son trying to do something new, even if you suspect Wona ™ € t like. Always encourage their interest in trying new foods and you will be rewarded when discover that they like broccoli and brussels sprouts. It may also be surprised by what their children can slip through. The holiday season is a good time to their snack foods donâ ™ € t eat all the days that are powerhousesâ € nutrition pumpkin, cranberries, tea and spices, for example.
Let help make figgy pudding. Children love to help in the kitchen, and by allowing a party of food preparation process, you can grab a big learning opportunity. And they especially ™ € ll enjoy a hand in the preparation of Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa feast. Explain why the use of certain foods and techniques to be healthier. Allow your children to help in the kitchen gives them a sense property on the food, and be more eager to gobble up a healthy dinner that had a hand in the kitchen!
Sneak â € € œfitnessâ gifts in their stockings. There are a lot of great (and cheap) resources out there that can help keep the maintenance of a style healthy living in their kids € ™ mind. For older children a subscription to a fitness magazine could make a good stocking stuffer. It could also throw in a gym DVDA € "€ ™ s beginnerâ martial arts and beginnerâ € ™ s yoga or pilates are excellent choices. For smaller my own series of brightly illustrated Children € ™ s books, cartoon characters â € € œEâ Heart Heart and friends, is a great success and a great way to get to think about healthy living. And jump ropes, stretch bands and weights are appropriate gifts for children of all ages and can be purchased for under $ 10. While the recession has caused many families to cancel fitness club memberships, the good news is that many, many components capacity at a reasonable price. You donâ t ™ €'s bust your budget to give their children the best gift alla € "the key to a healthy life.
Remember, get fit and healthy does not have to go to extremes. Itâ € ™ s to make small, gradual, incremental changes in their day. And thata € ™ s why the holiday is a good time to help their children start Processa € "thereâ € ™ s something valuable about practicing the art of moderation at a station known for the opposite.
You know the clichà © about New York € "If you can do it here, you can make it anywhere? Well, the same is true of the holiday. If you show your children that they can exercise when itâ € ™ s 20 degrees outside and you can stop with two sugar cookies instead of devouring six, think how much easier it to make healthy choices when itâ € ™ s hot outside and thereâ ™ € s not endless supply of goodies to tempt them. Getting the habit now and maintain throughout the year and they € ™ ll eventually become what you want to be: healthy and happy adults.

FRS Healthy Energy Powered Drink Mix comes in a box of single-serve stick packs. The packs are small, lightweight and easy to add to a water bottle. With just 10 calories each, they provide 250mg of quercetin in the lowest-calorie way to get FRS sustained energy. A DIFFERENT KIND OF ENERGY FRS's revolutionary blend of nutrients extends your body's natural energy, fueling you up when you need it while supporting your health over the long haul. There's no jittery feeling or roller-coaster ride - just prolonged energy that helps keep you focused and fully charged. That energy comes from our secret weapon, quercetin, an antioxidant found in foods like blueberries, apples and grapes. Its incredible ability to enhance your body's energy system is what keeps you feeling energized longer. Add a host of essential vitamins and you're ready to tackle anything from minor workouts to a major marathon. A single 11.5-ounce serving of FRS contains a healthy amount of quercetin, but one you'd have a hard time getting on your own; that is, unless you have a tendency to eat 40 apples in a single sitting. HOW TO USE FRS HEALTHY ENERGY For best results, take 2-3 servings per day. One in the morning, one in the afternoon and whenever you need extra energy. Athletes take 30 minutes before exercise. THE SCIENCE OF QUERCETIN Endurance and VO2max Study: Davis, Carlstedt et al. 2009 An independent, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study showed that when 12 healthy, active (but not highly trained) men and women consumed 500 mg of quercetin (QU995™) in an enriched drink mix twice daily for 7 days, they experienced a 13.2 % increase in endurance and a 3.9 % increase in VO2max (a typical measure of fitness). The study has been published online in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism. Sports Performance Study: MacRae, H. and Mefferd, K. 2006 An independent, double-blind, placebo - controlled crossover study on the effect of FRS on cycling performance in eleven elite cyclists was completed at Pepperdine University and published in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism. The results were dramatic: a 3.1% increase in performance--one minute and 31 seconds improvement in time to complete a 30km simulated mountainous time trial. Immune System Study: Neiman, David, Henson, DA, et al. 2007 A clinical study, funded in part by the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) showed the antioxidant quercetin significantly reduced incidence of upper respiratory tract illness during the two week period following intensified exercise. Researchers also reported enhanced alertness and reaction time in athletes taking the quercetin supplement during high stress. Forty test subjects were subjected to extreme physical stress during a five week period. Half were given 1,000 mg of quercetin daily (the approximate amount in 3 servings of FRS) and half were given a placebo. Results showed: Work Performance Study: Durak, E. and Bell, M. May 2005 During a six-week study, university employees were asked to perform their daily jobs, which required physical exertion, lifting, repetitive movements and attention to detail. At the end of the study, subjects experienced improvements in various measures of work performance, as measured in a Work Productivity Assessment Index survey. Features
