What are aphrodisiacs?

The word "Aphrodisiac" is derived from Aphrodite, the name of the Greek goddess of love. It refers to drugs to cause or increase sexual desire or excitement. A similar response in women may also lead to increased sexual stimulation. Arginine works directly in the genital area, while the other supplements act on the brain. Prostaglandins can be applied directly into the penis by injection or by the insertion of a small solid in the urethra. This is the most effective local active aphrodisiac.

What medications are used as aphrodisiacs?

A number of prescription drugs can act as sexual stimulants. These include levodopa (L-dopa), bromociptine, amantadine, naloxone, pergolide, and imipramine.

For men, sildenafil citrate, better known as Viagra, is approved for the treatment of impotence. Clinical studies have shown sildenafil citrate which corrects erectile dysfunction problems in 60 to 70 percent of men. Viagra is a drug commonly used to facilitate the erection male in relation to sexual stimulation.

Arginine is also taken by men and women to increase feelings of sexual organs and performance. Arginine works as well in women as in men. Prostaglandins have also been used as a local aphrodisiac agent. The role of oxytocin as an aphrodisiac potential of women is also under investigation.

What are the side effects?

Side effects of these aphrodisiacs include irregularities in heart rhythm, suicidal tendencies, mental disorders and tremors. These drugs should be used under medical advice.
The drug citrate Sildenafil has some side effects that last a few minutes to a few hours after taking the drug. These include dilation of blood vessels in other parts of the body, causing headaches and fainting. Other side effects such as flushing, stomach pain, blurred vision and sensitivity to light at generally occur at high doses.

So, suppose you have covered the basics. You pay attention to what you eat and taking some nutritional supplements. You follow a regular fitness routine. You are reasonably healthy. No environmental health problems that interfere with their sexual performance, or to have consulted a allopathically doctor and being treated with drugs. (Note that many prescription medications are known to interfere with sexual desire and performance. If you are taking any prescription medication, consult your doctor about side effects. It may be possible to prescribe a different medicine that does not interfere with their sex lives. )

If you are not doing these things, you may consider changing your habits before you experiment with aphrodisiacs. Regular exercise, good diet and basic nutritional supplements may be all you need to revitalize your sex life.
