Many families are appreciating home cooked food nowadays, due to the fact that eating out frequently is not a healthy choice, and in these times of an economic meltdown, is not financially viable. What are some fast and easy ways to get a well rounded vegan diet?


I'm a twelve year old vegetarian and I want to be a vegan. There are two problems. The first problem is that I'm REALLY busy and I need to find some vegan foods that are fast and easy. The second one is that if there's any special snacks that would be easy for a vegan, they need to be kind of inexpensive. I'm going to buy it with my own money (of which there isn't much) because I don't want my parents to have to pay for my decision. So basically, like I said in the title, what are some fast and easy ways to get a well rounded vegan diet?

Great questions, and you get a star for wanting to buy your own food instead of forcing your parents to change for you. Too many people won't even make their own meals.

The fastest way to have food available to you is to cook in bulk. When you're making a meal for dinner, make a lot of it. Then, put it into containers so you can just take it the next day. Pre-making salads is another great way for you to just grab and go in the morning.

For snacks, there aren't "special" snacks but I really like Luna bars. The company that makes them, Clif, also makes Clif bars and Clif Builder's bars, and they're all vegan-friendly. Recently, the Luna line has made these Luna Protein bars...and they are NOT vegan. Watch out for terms like:
egg
albumin
honey
whey
casein
cream
milk
as some products will contain these...and they are not vegan-friendly. But for super easy snacks, you can't go wrong with things like nuts and dried fruit (make your own trail mix...it's super easy and you get to put whatever YOU like into it), or fresh veggies and hummus, or fresh fruit. Nothing wrong with those! When I'm at school and forced to use the vending machine, the two products I know are vegan-friendly are Fritos and any kind of nuts they have in there. These also tend to be cheaper than bigger stuff, like the larger candy bars or cookies, which is nice. Can't argue with cheap!

Speaking of cheap, don't worry: vegan food is remarkably inexpensive...as long as you don't buy a bunch of pre-made meat replacements and stuff. A diet heavy in vegetables, grains, fruits, legumes, and nuts is really cheap and very healthy. For veggies, unless you're looking for things to make a salad, buy frozen...they're cheaper and last longer.

To answer your other questions, Morning Star, Boca, and other "veggie meat" companies aren't always vegan. You need to check the ingredients for the stuff I listed above to ensure that the product is vegan. Thankfully, some make it easy and write "VEGAN" right on the label. Because egg and dairy are allergens, they're required to be listed in the Allergen Warning at the bottom of the ingredient list, so that can help you, too.

As for pills and dietary supplements, don't worry about them. The entire supplement industry would collapse if people only ate properly. You see omnivores buying fish oil pills...why not just eat the fish? Or instead of eating a balanced diet, they buy multivitamins. In a culture where we just take pill, it's hard for people to understand that a vegan doesn't need to supplement...after all, they think that the omnivores need supplements!
