The Best Organic Snacks

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

If you are on a diet you might find yourself hungry between meals and wanting to snack or, perhaps you are just looking to live a healthier life and you have heard of organic foods. Whatever your reasons for organic snacks, there are plenty of them available and knowing which ones are good for you is a good way to choose which organic snacks to fill your cupboards with.

Organic snacks are popular because not only are they packed full of vitamins and nutrients, they are also grown naturally without any chemicals making them environmentally friendly and much healthier for you than normal snacks. When you are looking at packaging of snacks  be sure to look for the packaging that says organic on it – this way you can be sure that you are getting the organic snacks your body craves.

Here are a couple of organic snacks that are easy to find and that won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

  1. Raw fruits and vegetables.

It’s common knowledge that you should eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day but when is the right time to have one of these organic snacks?

The best time to snack on fruit and veg is about an hour before your meal – choose whatever fruit you like to eat and have one of these organic snacks (make sure they say organic) before your meal. This helps because it will reduce your appetite and when you have your meal you will actually eat less  because you will feel fuller quicker.

  1. Mixed seeds and nuts

These are perfect organic snacks for carrying around with you wherever you are, especially if you lead a hectic life style. Carry seeds and nuts with you in your handbag and when you feel the hunger pains are starting to creep up, snack on a couple of them. Whether you like almonds or cashews – make sure you buy them raw and  unsalted or whether you want seeds like sunflower or pumpkin seeds, these organic snacks are a great way to subdue your hunger until it is time to sit down and have a meal.

Raw pine nuts are also great organic snacks because they have less fat in them than most other nuts they are also rich in protein and very good for you.

  1. Smoothies

This is a great organic snack to get plenty of nutrients and anti oxidants. Buy some organic fruit or veg and put it all together in a blender with some yoghurt and honey and you have a great organic snack for any time of the day.

Banana, honey and vanilla makes a great combo.

  1. Rye bread and cottage cheese

Organic snacks don’t always have to be a small portion of food. If you feel like a sandwich you can have some rye bread, toasted or not, with some cottage cheese.

  1. Olives

Olives are also very healthy organic snacks  and the green and black ones are both equally as good for you – just don’t eat too many. Olives have lots of essential fatty acids in them which are great for your body.

So if you are hungry, reach for some organic snacks and keep your body and the environment happy!

Just the Right Size and Delicious!

by Katherine Ortiz from Fortuna, CA USA on 2010-07-20
These make a great snack or early breakfast item. They are just the right size for little fingers and little tummies. My 20 month old daughter loves these and I feel good about giving them to her. We've tried other snack bars but these taste the best.

These are not organic

by James Davis from on 2010-05-22
While Earth's Best produces great organic products for kids, these use some but not all organic ingredients. All Earth's Best products that are organic will have that word below their logo, this does not. We were disappointed to see these marketed as organic on this website but then noticed the legal disclaimer that Amazon will not be held responsible if the information on the site does not accurately describe the product. If you are looking for good, healthy cereal bars for kids, these are an excellent choice. But if you want a 100% organic cereal bar, keep shopping.

YUMMY!!

by La La Donna from Trinidad, West Indies on 2009-06-20
Bought these for my 15 month old and I will NEVER go back to the Gerber cereal bars. These have more nutritional value and cost less. The only down side is it's hard to get him to eat just one. It finishes so quickly he begs for more. I wish they made a slightly bigger size for bigger kidsGreat product!

Great On The Go Snack

by E. Hansen from Minnesota United States on 2009-05-10
We don't normally buy things like these, but I was able to get a really great deal on these. So we bought a case a took a chance. I'm glad we did. They actually do taste pretty darn good and they are the perfect serving size for one kid. We keep a box in the car for when we are out and about on extended periods of time. Quick, tasty snack and it's much better for you than drive thru!

No HFCS!

by Meghan Ross from Illinois on 2008-11-05
I like buying the Earth's Best bars for my toddler, because they don't contain high fructose corn syrup. They're one of the few cereal bar brands that don't have it. Plus, my son loves the taste of these bars!

Great!

Great tasty snack. My only complaint is they are very messy/crumbly. Not a good on-the-go snack.

Great breakfast bar for toddlers!

by K. Eckert from Minneapolis, MN on 2009-09-01
My son loves these breakfast bars and I love that he eats them. They are lower in sugar than some of the other options out there and higher in dietary fiber. They still have the added vitamins of other toddler cereal bars. Overall he could eat worse things for breakfast :-) We use it as a snack on the way to daycare in the morning, he eats his full breakfast later at daycare.I guess my only complaint would be that the bars do break apart pretty easy. This has lead to tears a few times in the mornings when my toddler is sad that his cereal bar broke. They also don't stand up to being thrown into the diaper bag very well.Other than that we love these bars!

Crumbly, Bumbly but altogether Humbly

by Dmitri Ulinov from California, USA on 2009-07-08
The other day Mrs. Ulinov and I were wondering what the earth's best tots cereal bar cherry would be? And we also were wondering if it would come in a 5.4 oz size or a more manageable 5.3 oz unit.Lo and behold, the earth has declared these cereal bars to be THE BEST. I only wish they would come in pear-rasberry or blueberry-apple flavor....and they have an organic label on the box so it must help to keep the global temperature down.

great breakfast bar!

by deanna feemster from Jax, FL on 2009-04-22
My son will be two in a few weeks and he has been eating these for breakfast for several months now. he'll eat about two or three of these bars in the morning along with his cup of milk. we love these and they're great to keep a some in the car in my purse...perfect little healthy snack!

Good but very sweet

by CJA from Frisco, Texas on 2009-04-20
Basically these are large fig newtons, cherry flavored. They're also small sized, good for toddlers and calorie-conscious adults, but be aware that they are less than 1/2 the size of an average cereal bar. I bought these thinking "healthy snack", but really I'd be better off giving my child some whole grain toast w/ jam and nut butter. These are convenient, though, but very crumbly/messy--not good car seat food IMO.

Eat and be Merry!

by Studio 511 from San Francisco, Ca on 2009-11-02
This is a really great follow up to the first book, Le Petit Appetit cookbook. As your children get older their tastes change and the way you cook and prepare food for them changes too. This cookbook makes it easy to transition your child to try new foods and get them involved in the process. The first 6 chapters go into detail about buying Organic, instilling good eating habits, and what foods could potentially be harmful to you child. It also has these really useful icons for each recipe that quickly lets you know if it's egg free, nut free, good to cook with your kids and so on. It's easy to use, has many tasty recipes and gets your kids involved in the kitchen. If only it would teach them to clean up after themselves too, then it would have everything! Also, this book and her first book, The Petite Appetit cookbook: Easy, organic recipes to nurture your baby and toddler are perfect new mom or baby shower gifts.

I don't think so

by lynetta from on 2009-10-28
I have to say that I haven't tried the recipes yet but I don't think I will be doing that any time soon. First, I have a 4 year old and I don't think she would eat many foods from the book. There are many ingrediants to most recipes that seem to be easier to buy. Such as recipes for pretzels, breadsticks, pizza dough, granola bars etc, rice milk. don't people usually just buy those ingrediants??? as it is very time consuming to bake all this first before even starting the rest? I mean, these are also made with flour, and the only reason i could see making these would be to maybe avoid gluten. Also, what is lavosh? She says to use it to make roll up sandwhiches so I can assume it's some kind of tortilla maybe. What is that... is she foreign or something? I just don't see the sense in making a lot of this when you could buy them easily it's kind of a waste of my time. The other things use alot of ingrediants and the outcome I just don't think my daughter would even enjoy. Also, a recipe for strawberry milk? Come on! I don't know about this ... if I made everything from scratch then I don't have time to spend with my girl and it usually tastes the same to me!

Great starting point for parents/child care providers

by A. K. Riley from Wisconsin on 2009-07-05
This book is full of great snack ideas, which is what I needed as I ran out of ideas after a year of family child care. Contains basic information regarding buying organics vs. conventional. Great, user friendly format. She provides nice storage tips for the recipes and nice pointers on how to include children in the kitchen as well. I really like this book and will definitely pursue her other cookbooks to add to my collection.

Healthful, tasty recipes

by D. Smith from on 2009-04-16
My family has enjoyed using the Salad People cookbook because of its healthful, easy-to-follow recipes. My oldest child is outgrowing the format of Salad People, so I thought this would be a great resource to help her become more involved in food procurement and meal preparation. I have my own versions of many of these recipes, but it is wonderful having a compendium of healthful, tasty food that our children and their friends will enjoy. While this is not a book designed for children, my second-grader enjoys reading the recipes, planning meals, and coming up with a shopping list. The recipes are all easy to follow and do not call for difficult-to-find ingredients (some of the ingredients can only be found at the health-food store, but can be substituted with more common (often non-organic) ingredients from the regular grocery store.Nutritional information on the sidebar is also a plus. The author also provides notations to let the reader know which meals can be packed easily for lunch, are dairy free, etc.

Fun and Practical

by Adrienne T. Markworth from San Francisco, CA on 2009-03-12
This book is a great follow up to The Petit Appetit Cookbook (one of my favorites)! It has a great layout and plenty of information about storage and variations (two things I consider must-haves in a good cookbook.) Two great recipes so far: French Toast fingers and Curry Chickpeas. The chickpeas are something SO simple, but I NEVER would have thought to do it. Now they've become a staple in our afternoon arsenal. Another thing I love is Lisa's writing style - her intros to the recipes make the book fun to page through even when you're not in a rush to get something on the table.

good teether biscuit

by E. Willis from on 2009-12-30
These are good teether biscuits. With four kids we have tried lots and they all break at some point, if a food was not able to break it would be very difficult for a child to eat. With any solid food babies need to be supervised. These are nice and dense and I feel break less easily than others. The kids like them, they are organic, and there are enough in the box to last a few weeks. If parents are having problems with their babies easily biting off pieces it may be best to break the biscuit in half and put it in a mesh feeder.

Yes, They Do Break

by A. Carriglio from on 2009-09-10
How do I know? Because my son choked on a piece that had broken off (and he hadn't cut a single tooth yet when this happened). I tried them again thinking that maybe just that one biscuit was "defective" but biscuit after biscuit continued to break. Now I'm stuck with a case of these biscuits because it's the only way that Amazon sells them. I may continue to give them to my son seeing as he seems to like the way they taste but will do so only when I have the time to sit down and watch him even more carefully than I usually do when he's feeding himself.

Horrible!

by scanpennett from Chicago, IL United States on 2009-06-12
I wanted to love these, my son does, but they DO BREAK and very easily. My 8 month old is able to bite off big pieces. This is not a safe baby product. For now I think we are going to stick to frozen banana in the baby safe feeders.

great product

by L. Todd from Houston, Tx on 2008-12-03
perfect for teething toddlers; they do not break off, which is excellent so that you do not have to worry about your child choking

Good for baby's digestion\bowel movements

by Judy from Woodmere, NY on 2010-04-30
After giving my baby (7 mos old) the prunes and plum combinations, she went very smoothly. She had some constipation before starting on the prunes and afterwards, she was a happy pooper! It was also easier to feed her fruits and grains together rather than separately, saving time. My baby also really liked the taste of these combinations which made it easier to feed her.

Tasty and Delicious

by Kristen O'donnell from San Francisco, CA on 2010-04-05
I'd continue to buy but I'm moving over to more home made finger foods and away from glass jars...shattered too many. They like all the flavors though. Great textures too.

Not a hit

by M. Swingler from on 2010-03-29
Our 7 month old really did not like any of combinations included in this variety pack. This may be specific to our baby, but it seemed to be a texture issue. Even if he seemed to like the taste-- he made himself gag trying to get it out of his mouth and didn't want to swallow it. He seems to be sensitive to texture anyway, so maybe this just wasn't a good choice for him. He does like the Earth's Best fruit variety pack, but any of the fruits mixed with grains were a definite no go. The nanny and I both even tried thinning down the mixture with breast milk or formula, and he still did not like it and spit it out. I would recommend trying one jar before you buy the variety pack because I had to give these away.

Great source of Calcium

by GTRs Mom from Santa Barbara, CA on 2009-10-29
My 1 year old son is underweight due to severe food allergies. He can't have even the smallest amount of dairy or egg. Getting him enough calcium has really been a challenge. These bars are easy to self feed and each contin 20% of the recommended daily value of calcium. They travel well and are great to keep in the diaper bag.

Organic does not equal healthy

by Juniper from Santa Cruz on 2009-04-14
We received two of the Earth's Best Bars in a holiday gift bag for our toddler. In an 18 gram bar, there were about 6 grams of sugar--a full third of the bar is sugar. No wonder there are rave reviews about how much the toddlers are enjoying them!

Kids Love These Bars

Our kids (2 and 4) love these bars. They've been eating them since about age 1 -- bars are moist, flavorful. The bars also travel well; we always take them with us on family outings, short or long, and we know the kids will eat them.

Convenient Snack, but too sweet

by PinkGrapefruit from New Haven, CT on 2010-08-30
I got these at snacks for my toddler (20 months). They're pretty convenient, but I don't love the taste of them, and neither does my daughter. She'll usually eat them, but sometimes won't (unlike other fruit bars I've given her). I find them too sweet.

My 2yr old LOVES these

by C. Bevilacqua from on 2010-06-27
This is my sons favorite snack. It is the perfect size for him to hold, and taste like real fruit. It is soft, so good for many ages. It even holds up well and doesn't make a big mess, so perfect for the car or purse.

great cereal bar

by MAC from Harrisburg, PA on 2010-06-10
We purchased the strawberry and banana bar and my daughter loves it, we have tried two other brands with no luck. We were looking for a healthy breakfast bar that did not have high fructose corn syrup. I recommend trying this this cereal first.

OK, but expensive, quite small, and overly sweet

by Jenny from Pittsburgh, PA on 2010-02-08
I ordered these for my daughter when she was about 7 or 8 months old. They are quite similar to a Nutrigrain cereal bar, but I wanted to avoid the processed sugars that are in Nutrigrain. My daughter loves cereal bars, including this one, and it is a very convenient food to bring on the go. However, I found these Earth Best bars to be expensive and quite small (although my daughter does tend to have a large appetite!) and overly sweet. I prefer the TLC Cereal Bars (found in the snack section of y grocery store rather than baby food section). They are less expensive and larger than Earth's Best, but are made of whole grains and avoid a lot of the processed ingredients found in Nutrigrain bars.

good bar, a little messy

by Anita from on 2009-10-11
my 18 month old liked these bars, however they seemed a little messy (crumbly texture).
