Buy Organic Food

The Reasons For Buying Organic Food

Organic food is the food derived from animals and plants that have been grown and raised in accordance with the strict guidelines associated with government's definition of the term, "organic." In order to be certified as an organic food, food must be grown without the use of products such as manufactured fertilizers, synthetic or man-made pesticides, additives that control or modify growth, antibodies, and/or and livestock feed containing additives.
Organic Foods Once Just a Niche Market

It wasn't that long ago that "eating organic" was something only a relatively small number of people did. Back in the 1960's, life was changing. Women were beginning to work outside the home and the trend then was convenience. Processed foods meant a good meal could be delivered to the table in a fraction of the time. The market for frozen and processed foods literally took off.

Organic food was definitely not something that most people gave much attention to especially since there no longer was enough time to visit the butcher, the produce vendor and the dairy farm. A quick trip to the supermarket could now provide a family with enough food for several days. And that's how life continued, fueled by the need for speed and convenience.

Organic Foods Go Mainstream

Lately, people's feelings towards the foods they eat are changing once again. This time, the change is being fueled by the feeling that people no longer know what they're putting into their bodies. The news today is filled with stories of E. coli outbreaks, genetic food engineering, the potential dangers of eating foods that are shot up with growth hormones to make them bigger and better, and other frightening information. Tired of feeling out of control, eating organic has become chic and has definitely become the latest trend in eating among people from all levels of society.

True organic food is more expensive than non-organic food, but the trade-offs are well worth the additional cost. Not only is organic food better for those who consume it, the people who eat organic foods claim these foods actually taste better than those grown and raised without this strict definition. In fact, eating organic is the best way and really is the only way to feel 100% confident about the foods that are consumed.

Meeting the New Demand

Today, organic food is big business and an ever-growing segment of the food industry. Farmers are changing the way they grow their foods to take advantage of this increased demand. Unfortunately for produce growers, it can take up to 2 full years for the land to cleanse itself of the synthetic pesticides and fertilizers that have been applied during all the years prior to growing organic. But the wait is a worthwhile trade-off as well.

Organic foods are so popular that it's no longer necessary to shop for them at specialty stores. In fact, large grocery store chains are constantly devoting more shelf space to meet the ever-growing needs of organic food devotees.

Great Balsamic Vinegar

by Patricia L. Demarest from USA on 2008-01-06
This vinegar is almost syrupy in its consistency. It has a wonderful flavor and can be used for both salads, as an ingredient in cooking and in desserts. Try some drizzled on very ripe strawberries, or over a sharp cheese like romano or parmesean.

Food journalist and former professional chef Cindy Burke writes in the introduction to this book: "Organic food can be so expensive and difficult to find that I always wondered if I was spending my money wisely. I decided to become informed, really informed, about the options — organic, conventional, local, sustainable — so that I could choose the healthiest, safest food available." To Buy or Not to Buy Organic is the result of Burke's investigations. It tells you how to choose the healthiest, safest, most earth-friendly food, as you make your way through the supermarket, your local farmer's market, or your natural foods store. Highlights include: Making sense of the choices presented by organic, local, sustainable, minimally treated, grass-fed and cage-free foods Reducing your exposure to pesticides Save money by knowing the foods you want to eat only if they're organic and the foods that are pesticide-free even when they are nonorganic Protecting your child's health from pesticides An at-a-glance shopper's guide to more than 100 foods

Practical, Informative Book

by fillygene from on 2010-08-10
This book is a must read for anyone who shops for food. The lists in it are especially helpful for people who do not want to or who do not have the time to focus on page after page of intense reading. It is also helpful for people who cannot afford to buy all items organically grown.

Changed my Life

by Heather W. Thomas from Bellefontaine, OH on 2010-05-23
This book literally changed the way that I will feed myself and my family for a lifetime. I always assumed our food was safe and that the FDA was looking out for me and my children - not trying to poison them. For us, it will only be organic or locally grown food that I know what's going on it or in it as the case may be.

Great go-to book for those who must decide between organic and non-organic foods

by M. Gamez from New York, NY on 2010-02-11
Many of us experience financial constraints when it comes to every purchase we make, including such essential ones as food. This book brings together a vast amount of information available through a number of sources, and takes us through the definitions of organic foods, and, ultimately, lists foods which should only be bought organic, and those which, if need be, can be bought from non-organic suppliers. Although the information is elsewhere, on the Internet, it is comforting to have this book with its extensive listing, to go to when in doubt. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to go as organic as possible, but often must make financially-based decisions on whether to buy organic, or buy more to feed their families. It is also an excellent reference for nutritionists, life coaches, and chefs who would like to understand the issues and confidently guide their clients.

Very helpful

Our family just decided to go organic. This book was a very easy read and opened my eyes to the world of organics. She also had a lot of references that proved to be very helpful.

Not too heavy

by The busiest suby from Alaska on 2010-01-10
I enjoyed the book's little stories from farmers more than anything. I like that it's not your typical alarmist book, that it's not preachy and elitest. It gives you enough information that leaves you concerned and questioning your food, but not screaming about armageddon in the farm fields! The chart in the back was helpful in figuring out where you don't want to compromise and where you have wiggle room. I recommend it to people who are curious about organics.

I will order it againF

by Kristina O'Donnelly from Atlantis on 2010-04-10
Flax oil is usually hard to take, but this one is actually pleasant. I cannot tout its miraculous benefits, my husband's bad cholesterol is still higher than it should be, he's been taking flax oil for the longest time (he takes fish oil too and I use safflower or olive oil for cooking) and has not touched meat or butter for two years, also, as with everything else that comes in a bottle, I just hope and pray that the ingredients are exactly as listed on the label... so we use it more on hope of its benefits rather than tangible results. Well, flax oil is good for you and you are better off taking it rather than not. I rated it 5 stars based on taste and the hope that the ingredients are exactly as listed...

Nice

by I'm A Retired Biker now from South West, Florida, US on 2010-06-26
Pretty good coffee I really liked it It is a bit on the strong side or it may be the way I brewed it but it is a good tasting coffee in my opinion.

ESE users - keep moving

by David T. Williams from on 2010-05-03
Product looked and smelled great - however, it was not clear from the description that this product is for non-ESE pod machines. I like the idea of organic and US source, this just didn't work for me.

Inferior Coffee

by 3X from Los Angeles on 2010-03-18
Aloha Island Coffee Company Bonzai Pipeline Dark Roast is a very mediocre, insipid coffee, rather acidic for a dark roast. The beans are of unknown origin, but if there are any Kona beans in this anonymous mix, they must be the ones other roasters threw out as it doesn't even vaguely taste like Kona. Actually, Aloha Island Coffee Co. isn't even in Hawaii, it's located in Santa Ana, CA, an area not exactly known for great coffee. The coffee is extremely overpriced for the poor quality you get, which is why I gave it one star, and you would be better off buying some of the better brands commonly sold in supermarkets at about one-third the price. I ordered the 2-8 oz bags, but I couldn't even make it through the first one and have thrown the second in the garbage. I would never buy anything from Aloha Island Coffee company again.

Really Good

by R. Gregersen from Chicago on 2010-01-10
Coffee from Hawaii is the best in the world, specificly the Kona side of the island and this is no exception.

Smooth, but no bite

by Derek Rubin from on 2009-07-22
I can see why plenty of people will think this is the best coffee ever. It's some of the smoothest, least bitter coffee I've ever tasted. The aroma is also delicious. Opening the bag and taking a whiff right away is a must if you want to try this. But I'm the type of coffee drinker who loves it black, so I need a coffee with a rich flavour on its own. I don't wanter bitterness, but I love coffee with kick to it.I'd call it too mild but that's kind of oversimplifying it. It's worth a try to make up your own mind though.
